About Whiskey Creek

Whiskey Creek is an area of Hilliers just 8 minutes west of Qualicum Beach, and just beyond Coombs as you travel up the Alberni Highway toward the city of Port Alberni.

Although the Whiskey Creek subdivision has a creek running through it, this is not Whiskey Creek - it is Crocker Creek, which supplies water to the Whiskey Creek Water District customers.

The actual Whiskey Creek is another kilometer up the road beside our local convenience store and gas station.

Whiskey Creek (or Whisky as it says on some maps) got its name years ago from the railroad workers who made a 'whistle-stop' just across from the present-day store.   In the early years, Whiskey Creek was used to cool barrels, although whether whisky was actually contained in these barrels may just be popular myth.  More recently and before the line was closed within the past decade, the railroad workers stopped the freight trains at this point to visit the store to buy snacks and coffee.

If any other stories about the early days of the Whiskey Creek area are in existence out there, or if you have pictures you can provide, please contact the webmaster or a WCMF director to submit them for this page.
